About the Designer
My name is Darren Abdilla, a proud Maltese sailor, yacht designer, and the creator of the Malteser and Orca International One Metre (IOM) racing yachts.
My passion for sailing began long before I discovered radio-controlled yachts. At just three years old, my father introduced me to the sport as a crew member aboard his boat. By the age of nine, I had begun training as a helmsman and quickly established myself as one of Malta's most promising young sailors. My early years were filled with success in local dinghy racing, and at twelve years old, I had the honour of representing Malta in Sicily in the Sunfish class.
As I progressed into the Olympic Laser class, physical challenges unfortunately brought my competitive dinghy career to an unexpected end. However, my love for sailing never faded. At the age of sixteen, my father introduced me to radio-controlled sailing, opening the door to an entirely new chapter. Although financial circumstances forced me to step away from the sport after only two years, I never lost the determination to return.
When I eventually came back to competitive radio sailing, I was more motivated than ever. Through dedication, countless hours on the water, and a constant desire to improve, I quickly re-established myself as one of Malta's leading IOM sailors. Over the years, I have won numerous national regattas, claimed the Malta National Championship multiple times, and competed against many of the world's finest skippers.
One of my proudest achievements came in 2014, when I represented Malta at the IOM European Championship at Lake Garda, Italy. Competing against 76 of Europe's best sailors, including World and European Champions, I finished 19th overall—a result that remains one of the highlights of my sailing career.

From Competitor to Designer
Years of racing at both national and international level taught me that success is never achieved through a single component. There is no universal "perfect setup." Every hull has its own personality, and extracting maximum performance requires balancing hull characteristics, foil geometry, ballast placement, rig tuning, mast setup, sail selection, and countless other details.
Boat tuning is an art—one that can only be mastered through years of experimentation, observation, and racing experience.
That philosophy became the foundation of my yacht designs.
The Birth of the Malteser
The Malteser project was born from a simple ambition: to design a modern IOM yacht capable of winning consistently at club level while remaining forgiving, versatile, and enjoyable to sail.
The name Malteser reflects my greatest source of pride, my homeland, Malta. Every boat carrying the Malteser name represents the country I am privileged to represent throughout my sailing career.
The original Malteser exceeded every expectation. It quickly earned a reputation as an exceptionally well-balanced, all-round racing yacht, proving itself capable of winning across a wide range of wind and water conditions. Over the following six years, the design consistently delivered race victories and podium finishes, confirming its place as one of the most successful club-level designs I have produced.
Raising the Bar – The Malteser2X
While the original Malteser continued to achieve excellent results, I never stopped analysing, testing, and searching for ways to improve.
The concept of the Malteser2X had already been developing in my mind for over five years. Every regatta, every design experiment, and every lesson learned contributed to refining the next generation.
Rather than simply replacing a successful boat, the goal was to evolve it—to create a yacht that builds upon the strengths of its predecessor while delivering even greater speed, balance, and versatility.
Today, I believe the Malteser2X represents that evolution and marks the next chapter in the Malteser story.
The Orca
Building upon the knowledge gained from years of racing and designing, I later developed the Orca, a completely new IOM concept focused on combining elite-level performance with exceptional build quality and value.
The Orca incorporates everything I have learned throughout my competitive sailing journey, from hull dynamics and foil efficiency to rig balance and handling characteristics. The objective was simple: create a yacht capable of competing at the highest level while remaining accessible to sailors around the world.
Looking Forward
For me, yacht design is an ongoing journey rather than a destination. Every race provides new data. Every sailor's feedback offers a fresh perspective. Every new idea presents another opportunity to improve.
Whether designing the Malteser, the Malteser2X, or the Orca, my objective has always remained the same—to produce racing yachts that inspire confidence, reward precise tuning, and give sailors the opportunity to perform at their very best.
